Check a lens serial number

Enter the complete lens number. The table covers 3,000,000 to 11,000,000. It cannot date the short, model-specific numbers introduced around 1980.

JavaScript is required for the automatic lookup. The underlying data are also available in the tables below.

For Carl Zeiss Jena photographic lenses using the old numbering system. Not for Zeiss Oberkochen, Zeiss-Opton/Opton, modern ZEISS lenses, camera bodies or other optical instruments. A number alone does not identify the model or its origin.

How is the lens placed in time?

The lookup uses ten approximate serial number reference points from Table 1 of Arne Cröll's study of VEB Carl Zeiss Jena, in its 17 November 2012 version. They run from number 3,000,000 with reference year 1947 to number 11,000,000 with reference year 1980. These are the table's limits, not production boundaries.

A matching number returns its approximate reference year; a number between entries returns the period between those table values. Actual manufacture may fall outside it: numbers were assigned in batches and sometimes reused. The source gives errors of about ±2 years, occasionally more. We do not calculate a more precise date or extrapolate beyond the table.

Frequently asked questions

Does this provide an exact year or a guaranteed production period?

No. Even an exact match with a table entry provides only an approximate date. A displayed range is a reference interval, not guaranteed manufacturing limits. The source's estimate of about ±2 years is not a fixed error bound either.

Does the table apply to every Zeiss lens and to my camera?

It applies to the old Carl Zeiss Jena numbering system within the covered range. Oberkochen and Opton use other numbering systems. The result neither dates a camera body or shutter nor identifies a lens model. Check the maker's marking as well as the number.

Why does a short serial number not return an early production year?

Around 1980, Jena introduced new numbering sequences for individual lens types. Many late lenses therefore have four- or five-digit numbers. These cannot be dated using the old table. This lookup also returns no year for other numbers outside 3,000,000 to 11,000,000.
