Cameras in 100 years: a blessing and a curse?

Selling cameras, lenses or a collection?

What might cameras be like a hundred years from now? Imagining their possibilities also raises questions about what we could lose. This is a speculative look at the pleasures and problems of future photography.

Buying and selling film and digital cameras

Imagine a camera that could read your intentions and handle every decision. It might be wonderfully convenient, but would we still practise the craft or develop a personal style? At what point would making a photograph turn into merely approving one?

Ever more polished images might change what we expect from the world around us. If reality has to compete with endlessly perfected pictures, we could become less attentive to the character of imperfect things.

Virtual objects and future cameras

Augmented reality could make it easy to add objects to a scene or reshape the surroundings in a photograph. That might be creative and entertaining, but it could also encourage us to favour a controllable digital world over unpredictable encounters in the real one.

A future camera might also ask us to exchange privacy for convenience. Recording directly from our field of vision or using biometric sensors could produce a continuous record of life, with difficult questions about who could access it.

Imagination and responsibility

Those possibilities are reasons to think carefully, not reasons to abandon new technology. The challenge would be to decide what we want cameras to do, what we want to keep doing ourselves and which boundaries matter.

Perhaps Analog Lounge will still be here in a hundred years, selling contraband film from a secret cellar after some imagined ban on film production. Let us hope the future is less dramatic than that. 😉
